Here are more great items to store in your emergency stash that are easy to grab and lurking at your local Costco!
White Vinegar uses: Cleaning all sorts of things, softening laundry, odors, disinfect cutting boards, add to laundry to help kill bacteria, whitens laundry (soak over night), keeps 4 legged animals out of your garden, sends ants packing, cooking and much more.
Baking Soda uses: Deoderizer, baking, abrasive cleaner, bug bites, sunburn, poison ivy, bee stings, use as a mouthwash, helps keep weeds away when sprinkled on cement cracks etc. create a antacid, melts ice and more
Sugar: Put your sugar in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that has a rubber seal. This prevents them from leaking if the bucket were to be in a flood. Rodents can eat through the bag if its left out so putting the sugar in a bucket will ensure that it lasts longer. TIP: do NOT use an oxygen absorber in your bucket with sugar, it will turn it into a solid hard brick.
Oatmeal: The best way to store oats is to buy Oat Groats and store them in a bucket. An oat groat is the whole oat grain before being processed.(looks like a grain of wheat). Have you ever heard of steel cut oats?? Steel cut oats are Oat Groats chopped up with steel blades. If the hull surrounding the grain is open, cut, rolled, the nutrients start to deplete by the hour. Storing some oatmeal ready to go does have its benefits. Its fast and easy. Its a great short term food storage item. Oat Groats are a great long term food storage item.
Dehydrated fruits and veggies: Great great great to store. If you are not able to buy items at the store and if you don’t have a garden at the time of need, how will you get fruits and vegetables? Dehydrated foods are great to have on hand. Freeze dried food will last longer but is more expensive. Dehydrated foods are something that you yourself can easy put through the process and store in your home or buy from online companies. See how to dehydrate foods here:
Protein: Canned meat is short term food storage item. Freeze dried and dehydrated meats will last much longer and are more expensive. If you live in Utah/Idaho area consider taking a day trip to Preston Idaho and canning your own goods. You get twice the meat for the same price as what you pay in the store and best of all you know exactly what goes into that can. I canned my own this last fall and loved it!!
To order freeze dried meat I suggest ordering here: www.honeyville.com sign up for their emails and watch for their sales. They do 10% pretty regularly and there are a couple times of year they do 20% off and thats when you want to stock up!
