Essential information when it comes to self reliance!
Baby it’s cold outside!
Dress Warm and Stay Warm
You definitely want to start with a a base layer. This is the layer closest to your skin. My first choice is a top made of Merino Wool. Merino Wool fiber can absorb large quantities of moisture then move it away so it can evaporate into the air. The fibers are super fine which makes it very soft and it also has elastic properties which makes it stretchy! Merino wool reacts to temperatures on the body so it will keep you warm or cold when ya need it!
If you don’t get Merino Wool you will want to get a non cotton blend. This can be a blend of polyester, rayon, acrylic, spandex etc. Be sure to avoid cotton! That goes for socks, shirts, gloves…..everything.
Where to buy base layers: All over! Sporting good stores, Costco, online. Under Armor has base layers that start with 2.0 and go up to 4.0 increasing in thickness and of course price as well. They are quit thick and very nice. I found deals on zulily and zappos as well. Google them to find the best deal. I recently found a simple kids base layer top and bottom set for just $6.99 at my local Costco! They also had Merino Wool hats, socks and good gloves.
TIP: When deciding what items to purchase for your Emergency Preparedness supplies keep this simple tip in mind. You want to create a barrier WITHIN a barrier. So that would be a thinner glove and then your thick nice gloves over the top. The same goes for your coat. A barrier within a barrier. So perhaps a fleece inner jacket then a outer jacket. This is why you will find that ski jackets have 2 layers. It allows you to stay warm but shed layers as well.
Remember that children cannot regulate their body temperature as well as adults. You may want to keep some hand and feet warmers in with your emergency supplies. My local Costco also currently has hand and feet warmers available.
