Woodcutting Radial Arm Saw Models
Original Saw Company produces quality, American-made radial arm saws. These wood cutting machines are capable of a wide variety of applications. Use the saw to make straight cuts, miter cuts, compound miter cuts and beveling, as well as dado operations.
We make motors for all our machines manufactured in our Northern Iowa facility. Producing our own motors lets us hold a high level of quality in our machines.
Totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) motors are made with cooling ducts. These cooling ducts move air through the motor laminations. Due to the ducts, the laminations stay cool. Having an enclosed motor keeps the internal part of the motor sealed from dust and contamination.
In addition our motors also offer the added benefit of an integrated electro-mechanical brake system. The brake system continues to operate even if the power drops out. Electronic brake systems can not compete with the durability or reliability of our electro-mechanical brake systems.
We manufacture Original Saw Company Radial Arm Saws using high-quality iron and aluminum cast construction. These castings provide a rigid, vibration-free cutting platform. It allows the saw to perform many different operations.
Most importantly, we can proudly say our machines are the best in the industry. Many of the machines we produce today will be around for generations.
At Original Saw Company, we build our own custom electrical panels. Panels are built specifically for our machinery and can be certified for the North American market.
We can build certified panels that meet CSA (Canada) and UL508A (United States) standards. Original Saw Company’s panel shop is certified by ETL labs to meet specifications.
There are several advantages to having a UL-listed panel shop onsite.
- The first advantage is quality control. Our panel makers build and perform quality control inspections at our location, which helps control costs.
- Original Saw can also build panels for various voltages for the overseas markets.
Standard panels control the machine and feature low voltage controls, over current thermal protection, and an E-Stop.
Customized panel solutions allow additional items to be utilized in control panels, such as hour meters to track the arbor motor run time. Making our panels enables custom solutions for blade speed when cutting various materials or for large blade sizes.
Safety is always the first priority when working with any type of tool. Download these sheets about safety and display them near your radial arm saw. The sheets can assist you when identifying potential hazards and conducting safety inspections.
Safety inspections conducted using workplace safety inspection checklists can help thoroughly assess the safety of the equipment and address hazards that could lead to costly, but preventable work-related incidents.
Crosscut Power Saws
We developed the Crosscut Power Saws in our Northern Iowa facility to safely and effectively make simple crosscuts. These saws easily cut wood, wood products, composite material and plastics and make crosscuts of up to 18″.
All cutting is done safely inside of a cutting box under a Lexan polycarbonate top. While the saw is in operation, the machine pulls the sawdust back into the machine. Next, the dust port removes the dust on the back side of the frame. It is the perfect combination of efficiency, precision and safety.
The Semi-Automatic Crosscut Power Saw features a semi-automatic cycle. An operator pushes a button and the blade becomes visible as it cuts through the material.
How does this work?
- First slide the material into the side of the saw and under the Lexan top.
- Secondly, clamp it into place using manual or pneumatic clamps.
- Next, merely push the button to activate the cycle. The carriage moves radially forward and cuts the material. On these models, the carriage stroke is controlled by the adjustable stops on the right side of the machine.
- Lastly, the carriage returns to its home position under the machine’s cover.
The operator powers a Manual Crosscut Power Saw. When the operator pulls the saw handle, the blade is visible and makes the cut.
- When cutting material, first slide it into the side of the saw under the Lexan top.
- Secondly, clamp it into place with manual or pneumatic clamps.
- Next, simply use the pull-handle on the right side of the machine. Pull the carriage forward radially to cut through the material.
- After that, let go of the load on the handle.
- Lastly, the carriage will return to its home position under the machine’s cover.
Manufacturing of motors occurs in our Northern Iowa facility. By producing our own motors, it allows us to uphold a high level of quality. TECF (totally enclosed fan cooled) motors contain cooling ducts, which moves air through the motor laminations. In addition, the internal portion of the motor is sealed from dust and contamination.
Both the Manual and Semi-Automatic Crosscut Power Saws have a variable frequency drive (VFD), which eliminates the need for a mechanical brake. The start up amps are reduced and the life of the motor is prolonged.
Construction of these machines consist of a heavy-gauge, steel frame. Further, the frame is powder coated for a long lasting finish. The beam and carriage assembly are housed inside the frame and the carriage rides on precision linear guides. This assembly creates a rigid and accurate moving carriage and produces smooth cuts for the life of the machine.
In short, you can count on making safe, repeatable, straight cuts for years to come.
Crosscut Power Saws are set apart because of their safety features.
- The Lexan Polycarbonate enclosed cutting area covers the top of the saw and makes a totally enclosed cutting space. Unlike other saws, the operator is unable to get a hand near the blade. Cutting safety is markedly increased due to the enclosed cutting area.
- While the saw is in operation, the machine pulls the sawdust back into the machine and the dust port removes the dust on the backside of the frame.
- When cutting material, the blade becomes visible under the Lexan top as it is moves forward. The blade moves radially forward as it travels on a heavy fabricated steel beam. The carriage pulls the blade through the material to make the cut. After the cut, the carriage returns to its home position under the machine cover.
Metal Cutting Radial Arm Saws
Metal Cutting Radial Arm Saws are able to do a wide variety of cut-off work. Make cuts through aluminum, steel, brass, bronze, plastics, and fiberglass. Not only can the Metal Cutting Radial Arm Saw make straight cuts, some models can also do miter cuts, bevel cuts, and compound miter cuts.
These Metal Cutting Radial Arm Saws are available as manual or semi-automatic models.
Cutting non-ferrous material such as aluminum, copper and soft brass is done effectively on the Original Saw Metal Cutting Series. Above all, blade choice is an important factor.
First, consider the wall thickness of the material. Most of the time extruded aluminum is being cut. If the wall thickness is under 1/8”, choose a high speed steel blade with approximately 250 to 300 teeth. On the other hand, if the wall thickness is 1/8″ or greater, use a carbide tipped non-ferrous blade with a negative 5 degree hook. Using this type of blade will lower the chance of the blade grabbing the material and will provide a smooth finish.
Secondly, consider the stiffness and shape of the extrusion. If your extrusion has a thin wall with a flat area, flex may occur during cutting. In addition, there is a chance the wall may chatter during cutting. This can cause the carbide teeth to chip or break if the material is too thin.
Thirdly, in most non-ferrous cutting applications we recommend a mist coolant system The mist coolant system will extend blade life and cut quality will be improved. Not using a mist coolant will allow the blade’s gullets between the teeth to “clog up” with material. This will require more frequent blade sharpening.
To summarize, look at the wall thickness, stiffness and the shape of the extrusion. Equally important is choosing the proper blade and considering a mist coolant system. This will result in quality cuts.
Cutting ferrous material (steel) can also be done quickly and effectively on Original Saw Metal Cutting Series machines. Material up to 8 gauge can easily be cut with our high speed steel blades. These blades, which run at 3400 RPM, are friction cutting blades. They melt the material rather than cutting it.
With this type of cut, the advantage is speed over cut quality. The cut is very accurate, however, there will be a slight burr because of the friction cutting action. Material thickness, speed of the carriage and the type of material are factors that affect the burr size.
Most importantly, mist coolant on ferrous material cutting is prohibited and will make the burr size much larger.
The Metal Cutting Series comes standard with a T-Slot aluminum extruded top. This top easily attaches to our aluminum fence, clamping systems, table surface options, as well as your own clamping jigs or cutting fixtures.
The T-Slot Aluminum Extruded Table Top comes mounted to an extruded leveling frame for easy leveling of the entire table assembly throughout the life of the machine.
The Metal Cutting Radial Arm Saw comes standard with a manual chain feed assembly. This feature gives the operator better control of the carriage versus pulling the carriage by hand.
Original Saw Company produces all Metal Cutting Super Duty Series motors in our Northern Iowa facility. Producing our own motors allows us to uphold a high level of quality in our machines.
We produce totally enclosed, fan cooled (TEFC) motors. Cooling ducts move air through the motor laminations to keep them cool. In addition, the motors are made to keep the internal portion of the motor sealed from dust and contamination. Our motors also have the benefit of an integrated electro-mechanical brake system. Due to this braking system, the saw continues to operate even if the power drops out.
Electronic brake systems cannot compete with the durability or reliability of our electro-mechanical brake systems.
We manufacture Original Saw Company Metal Cutting Radial Arm Saws from high-quality heavy cast iron and cast aluminum. These American castings provide a rigid, vibration free cutting platform. Because of this, the radial arm saw performs many different sawing operations.
As a result of this construction, we can proudly say our machines are the best in the industry. Many machines we produce today will be used for generations.
The exclusive door style guard allows quick and easy blade changes. The guard should be opened only when the blade needs to be changed. This is a very important feature for the ferrous cutting application when frequent blade changes are necessary for optimum cutting performance and safety.
Original Saw Beam Saw
The Horizontal Beam Saw is an important tool to boost production. Weighing in at 1500 pounds, it is made of cast iron, cast aluminum, a box tubing beam, and a steel frame. Due to its durability, this hefty machine can be used two to three work shifts per day in an industrial setting.
In addition to the many hours this saw can “work”, it has the ability to make long 64″ crosscuts. Its powerful motor lets the Beam Saw cut several pieces of material at a time. When the Electronic Powered Cross Feed is added to the Beam Saw, it becomes a semi-automatic machine. Include a Pneumatic Clamping System to further customize the cutting process.
They are used by companies that need to make deep and long cuts. A beam saw can cut up to 64” long and 8” deep. Features that are important to beam saw owners are power and a variety cutting options.
Due to these features, many of the saws are found in the following industries: curtain wall, metal roofing, panel production, steel buildings, conceptual model production, canopy manufacturing and logging.
